Monticello is home to 5,516 residents and located in East Central Illinois between the cities of Decatur and Champaign, Illinois. Allerton Park, a private residence and gardens built in 1900 by artist and philanthropist Robert Allenton is just outside of town. It is considered one of the seven wonders in Illinois. The park is a historical treasure that contains 1,500 acres of woodland and prairie areas, a mansion and reflecting pond, a 10-acre meadow, formal sculpture gardens, hiking trails, and several lodging facilities.
